1) Answer all the following questions: 1. What is welding? How is it classified? Welding is a process for joining two similar or dissimilar metals by fusion. 2. What are the advantages, disadvantages and applications of welding joints over other joints? ADVANTAGES OF WELDING 1. Welding is more economical and is much faster process as compared to other 2. Welding, if properly controlled results permanent joints having strength equal or sometimes more than base metal. 3. Large number of metals and alloys both similar and dissimilar can be joined by welding. 4. General welding equipment is not very costly. 5. Portable welding equipments can be easily made available. 6. Welding permits considerable freedom in design. 7. Welding can join welding jobs through spots, as continuous pressure tight seams, end-to-end and in a number of other configurations. 8. Welding can also be mechanized DISADVANTAGES OF WELDING  1. It results in residual stresses and distortion of the workpieces.  2....

1) Answer all the following questions: 1. Define casting. What four basic steps are generally involved in making a casting? *It means pouring molten metal into a refractory mold cavity and allows it to solidify.  1. Initially a suitable size of molding box for creating suitable wall thickness is selected for a two piece pattern. Sufficient care should also be taken in such that sense that the molding box must adjust mold cavity, riser and the gating system (sprue, runner and gates etc.) . 2.Next, place the drag portion of the pattern with the parting surface down on the bottom (ram-up) board  3.The facing sand is then sprinkled carefully all around the pattern so that the pattern does not stick with molding sand during withdrawn of the pattern 4. The drag is then filled with loose prepared molding sand and ramming of the molding sand is done uniformly in the molding box around the pattern. Fill the molding sand once again and then perform ramming. Repeat the process three four...

1) Answer all the following questions: 1. How are engineering materials classified? Metals and alloys are further classified into two major kind namely ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. 2. How ferrous metals differ from non-ferrous metals? (a) Ferrous metals are those which have the iron as their main constituent, such as pig iron, cast iron, wrought iron and steels . (b) Non-ferrous metals are those which have a metal other than iron as their main constituent, such as copper, aluminium, brass, bronze, tin, silver zinc, invar etc 3. State the name of important iron ores? 1. Pig iron 2. Cast iron 3. Wrought iron 4. Steel 4. How cast iron differs from steel? cast iron varies from 1.7% to 6.67% but carbon content maximum up to 1.7%. 5. Write short notes on ? (i) Pig iron C=1.7% to 6.67%. (ii) Grey cast iron C = 2.5 to 3.8% (iii) White cast iron C = 3.2 to 3.6% (iv) Ductile cast iron C=3.2 to 4.2% (v) Malleable cast iron. 6. Discuss in brief the effect of impurities in cast iron? Impu...
